# Word Preparation #

## opera: 歌剧 ##

a musical play in which most of the words are sung, or plays and music of this type

I enjoy going to operas, but my girlfriend never wants to go with me.  
我喜欢去看歌剧，但我女朋友从来不想陪我去。

Jane bought two tickets to the opera for next weekend.  
Jane买了两张下个周末的歌剧票。

## appealing: 吸引人的 ##

attractive or interesting

This movie doesn’t sound appealing, so I don’t think I’ll watch it with you guys.  
这个电影听上去不是很吸引人，所以我不想跟你们一起去看了。

A sushi buffet sounds very appealing right now.  
现如今，寿司自助听上去很吸引人。

## folk song: 民歌 ##

a traditional song of a particular region or a group of people

My father knows how to play a lot of folk songs on the guitar.  
我的爸爸会用吉他弹奏很多民歌。

We sang a lot of folk songs at her birthday party.  
我们在她的生日聚会上唱了很多民歌。

## be onstage: 在舞台上 ##

to be an actor/actress or a performer on the stage

James really wants to be onstage, but he just doesn’t have any talent.  
James非常想上台表演，但他却没有什么天赋。

Being onstage is not as easy as you think it is.  
上台表演不像你想象的那么容易。

## in awe of someone or something: 敬畏 ##

to feel great respect for someone or something

She stood in awe of the lion as it jumped across the river.

I am always in awe of the spectacular sunset whenever I go to the beach.

## never a dull moment: 从来不会乏味 ##

always exciting and interesting

There’s never a dull moment when you are with Richard.

# Grammar #

## 动名词 gerund ##

动名词由 “动词+ing“ 形式构成，与动词的现在分词形式相同，但是语法与语义都不一样。动名词的作用类似名词，在句子中可以做主语，宾语，表语等成分；可以位于句首作主语，也可以用it作形式主语，把真正的主语置于句尾。另外，动名词还可以用在there be结构中。

*  Being poor is no disgrace. (作主语)
 *  It is a waste of time persuading such a person to join us. （it作形式主语，动名词作真正主语位于句尾）
 *  There is no telling when we can complete the project. (作表语)
 *  I appreciate her devoting herself to education. (作宾语)
