## self-study: 自学 ##

a way of learning by studying alone, not with a class or a teacher

## determined: 坚决的 ##

wanting to do something very much and not allowing anyone or any difficulties to stop you

She’s determined to make a success of this project.

## dead serious: 极为认真的 ##

absolutely serious; not joking

He was dead serious when he said no.

## better oneself: 提高自己 ##

to improve work or actions to become successful

注：这里better用作及物动词

Reading books is a way to better oneself.

He is going to night school because he wants to better himself.

## open up sth: （使某事物）成为可能 ##

to allow something to happen or create opportunities

Learning another language opens up more job opportunities.  
学习另外一种语言可以获得更多就业机会。

Learning an instrument opens people up to different styles of music.  
学习一种乐器可以让人们接触到不同类型的音乐。

## prepare someone for sth: 帮助某人对某事做好准备 ##

to get someone ready for something

I went in and had a talk with her to prepare her for the presentation.  
我走进去跟她谈话，帮助她准备她的演讲。

She is able to prepare her students for the final exam.  
她可以帮助她的学生们准备期末考试。

# Grammar #

## the usage of “also, too, so, and as well” ##

1.  副词 also 表示 “也，而且，并且” 的意思，用于肯定句或疑问句中， 但一般位于句中，通常位于 be/助动词/情态动词之后，实义动词之前。例如：He has been to Beijing. I have **also** been there.
2.  副词 too 表示 “也”，常用于肯定句或疑问句中，可与 also 相互置换，但 too 一般放于句末。例如：He likes China, **too**.
3.  副词 so 作 “也” 解释时，用于肯定句加倒装结构 “so + 助词/be/情态动词 + 主语”中，表示倒装结构中的主语 “也一样”。例如：I am 15 years old. So is he. (= He is 15 years old, too.) 如果前一句是否定句，则该倒装结构中用 neither。例如：— I don’t like carrots. — Neither do I.
4.  副词短语 as well 表示 “也” 的意思，经常与 too 交替使用，且位于句尾。例如：You can do it; I can do it as well.

 *  He studies hard and I study hard, too.
 *  She likes reading science fiction novels. So do I.
 *  Filter coffee is better for your health than instant coffee, and it tastes nicer as well.
